Gamma – What a typical Greek dinner looks like – what to expect
Many people who are planning a trip to Greece wonder what to expect on the table. Will this food be similar to our tastes or maybe completely different? We will show you in this article that there is nothing to be afraid of and that Greek food is not only delicious, but can also be found in our parts.
Let’s start with the starters.
Greeks like to play, drink wine or tsipouro and eat mini snacks – meze. For such snacks, they make delicious dips. The most popular of them are known all over the world, such as tzatziki or Greek yogurt dip with grated cucumbers. Apart from the tzatziki, the so-called Horiatki, which is simply a Greek salad. The last popular dip is melizanosalata, or eggplant paste. Each housewife makes it in her own way, but each one will have toasted eggplant, garlic and olive oil.
After the starters, it’s time for the main course
During lunch in Greece, a traditional meal is white bean soup, or Fasolatha in Greek. In addition to Fasolatha, on the Greek table you can find moussake, i.e. a casserole of eggplant, tomatoes and minced meat, sometimes you can also find thinly sliced potato slices in it. The second popular meal may be Greek gyros served in various forms such as pita bread served with vegetables.
When we are full, we should “cram” ourselves with something sweet.
When we finish eating lunch or dinner in Greek taverns, we will receive a sweet snack. Greeks like sweet dishes, so you can find baklave on the tables. It is a dough prepared from layers of thin phyll dough with a specially prepared mixture of mainly nuts and almonds. Apart from baklava, you can also see halva, which is ground sesame seeds with honey.
Each dish could use a drink, the Greeks value wines very much and have some of the best in the world.
